Having thought more about feces than I expected these last few years, I noticed that the colon mechanics that produce square wombat poop have now been modeled.
You might say, a new angle on poop. Having observed that the poop of a large number of diverse species is easily recognizable, I would guess that the differences lie in colon mechanics, as in the reference you cited. Just to mention, in Alaska you can buy tourist gimcracks made of moose poop, nice, neat ovoid objects.
Really interesting!
