I really enjoy your writings, drawings, and insights and marvel at your industry and expertise! The only drawback is my elevated sense of sloth - ah well, there's a place for the underachievers too. We enjoy the fruits of others. Carry on.

Thank you for this pensive essay and the subtle, powerful photos. They serve as reminders of how quickly and devastatingly societies can go terribly off the rails. The message is especially timely, given the dangerous rise of authoritarianism rearing its head in our country right now. This piece prompts me to do more to stop it in its tracks.

Good essay, Walter. I noticed Nik's comment below and she captured my thoughts sufficiently. And without a screed.

What a compelling, touching and beautiful read, Walter! Very reminiscent of what we saw in Hamburg this summer.

Very much appreciate and moved by this account and a city haunted by the ghosts of the horrors of the past. The soil of some parts of Europe are so blood soaked that I would hesitate to step on them, beflowered as they now are, if I could not turn off that part of me that knows their history. All those monuments in modern Berlin serve to prevent us from turning that switch. Perhaps to our discomfort, but also to keep the memory alive while it serves us.
